- Supplements, Mobility and Staying Active as You Get Older
Staying active as you get older is not usually about finding one “anti-ageing” supplement.
Mobility depends on muscles, joints, bones, balance, cardiovascular health, adequate nutrition, recovery and continuing to use the body.
Supplements can play a supporting role, but they work best when viewed as one part of a much bigger picture.
What helps you stay active as you get older?
The main foundations are:
- Regular physical activity.
- Maintaining muscle strength.
- Balance and flexibility.
- Adequate protein and overall nutrition.
- Healthy bones.
- Sleep and recovery.
- Managing health conditions appropriately.
Older people are generally encouraged to remain as physically active as their abilities allow and include regular muscle-strengthening and balance activities.
Muscle matters for mobility
Strong muscles help us stand up, climb stairs, carry things, maintain balance and support our joints.
Maintaining strength therefore becomes increasingly important with age.
Resistance activities may include weights, resistance bands, body-weight exercises, gardening and other tasks that challenge muscles appropriately.
Protein and ageing
Protein supplies amino acids used throughout the body, including in muscle and other tissues.
Older people may need to pay greater attention to regular protein intake as part of maintaining normal muscle and body function.
Whole foods should remain the foundation.
Supplements can be considered when there is a specific nutritional reason or personal preference.
Joint health matters too
Maintaining mobility requires joints that can continue to move comfortably through the activities a person wants to perform.
Movement and strength help maintain function, while nutrition provides the raw materials the body uses in its normal tissue-maintenance processes.
What supplements do people consider as they get older?
Depending on diet, health status and personal goals, people may investigate products such as:
- Protein supplements.
- Vitamin D where appropriate.
- Calcium where dietary intake or clinical circumstances indicate a need.
- Omega-3 supplements.
- Collagen products.
- Joint-support formulations.
- Deer velvet.
These products are not interchangeable and are not necessary for everyone.
Where does deer velvet fit into active ageing?
Kathy Cane sees deer velvet as particularly relevant to people who want broad nutritional support while maintaining an active lifestyle.
It naturally contains proteins, amino acids, collagen, minerals, glycosaminoglycans and other compounds within rapidly growing connective and skeletal tissue.
Canes’ position is that this nutrient combination can support normal joint structure, connective-tissue maintenance, mobility, general wellbeing and the body’s normal maintenance processes.
It should not be viewed as a replacement for movement, adequate protein, good nutrition or appropriate healthcare.
Why does Canes focus on staying active?
Many Canes customers are not elite athletes.
They are people who want to continue farming, hiking, gardening, travelling, walking, playing sport and enjoying daily life.
That is why Kathy tends to frame deer velvet around supporting the body to meet everyday physical demands rather than around a single disease or symptom.
What if aches and mobility problems are getting worse?
Supplements should not be used to ignore a significant change in your health.
New or worsening pain, unexplained weakness, repeated falls, sudden loss of mobility or symptoms that interfere substantially with daily activity deserve appropriate assessment.
A practical active-ageing approach
Rather than asking only “Which supplement should I take?”, Kathy recommends thinking about the whole system:
- Keep moving in ways appropriate to your body.
- Maintain strength and balance.
- Eat a varied diet with adequate protein and nutrients.
- Give your body enough recovery and sleep.
- Address significant health problems rather than working around them.
- Use supplements where they make sense for your nutritional goals.
